THE ROLE

StoryCorps is seeking a creative, strategic, and collaborative Social Media Manager to lead and grow the social presence of two distinct but values-aligned initiatives: One Small Step and Brightness in Black. This role will split time evenly between managing the established One Small Step social media channels and launching and building the Brightness in Black social media presence from the ground up.

While consulting closely with both program teams, this role will report centrally to the Director of Marketing Engagement & Communications, ensuring alignment with StoryCorps’ broader brand, audience, and engagement goals.

This is an exciting opportunity for a social media professional who thrives at the intersection of storytelling, social impact, audience growth, and community engagement—and who is energized by both stewardship of an existing brand and the creative challenge of launching something new.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

One Small Step (50%)

  • Develop and manage the social media strategy for One Small Step, and execute the day-to-day across platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok).
  •  Develop a compelling content strategy that amplifies participant stories, promotes national and local engagement opportunities, and reflects the initiative’s mission to foster connection across differences.
  •  Work with the content creator/editor to promote content that reflects and strengthens the One Small Step brand. Collaborate with the One Small Step team to translate program goals, campaigns, and moments into effective social storytelling.
  • Plan and manage editorial calendars, ensuring timely, relevant, and consistent posting.
  • Monitor performance, track metrics, and provide regular insights and recommendations to optimize reach, engagement, and participation.
  •  Engage with the One Small Step community by responding to comments, messages, and relevant conversations in a thoughtful and mission-aligned way.
  • Create basic content as needed, with advanced work handled by the video editor.

Brightness in Black (50%)

  • Lead the launch and development of Brightness in Black’s social media presence, including channel strategy, tone, visual direction, and content strategy.
  • Work closely with the Brightness in Black team to define social goals, audience segments, and storytelling priorities.
  • Work with the content creator/editor to promote content that reflects and strengthens the Brightness in Black brand while centering Black joy in an authentic, bold, and engaging way.
  • Establish workflows, posting cadence, and best practices for a new brand on social media.
  • Grow and nurture an engaged audience from the ground up through organic strategies, partnerships, trends, and community interaction.
  •  Track and analyze performance, using insights to refine strategy as the channels evolve.
  • Engage with the Brightness in Black community by responding to comments, messages, and relevant conversations in a thoughtful and mission-aligned way.
  • Create basic content as needed, with advanced work handled by the video editor.

Cross-functional & Strategic Responsibilities

  • Serve as a thought partner and social media expert to both initiative teams, translating organizational and programmatic goals into effective social strategies.
  • Ensure consistency with StoryCorps’ overall brand values while honoring the distinct identities of One Small Step and Brightness in Black.
  • Collaborate with designers, writers, video producers, and external partners as needed.
  •  Stay current on social media trends, platform updates, and emerging best practices, especially as they relate to storytelling, social impact, and community-building.
  • Manage Brightness in Black and One Small Step social media ad campaigns, coordinating digital ad copy, creative, and content with the external agency.
  •  5% of the job is dedicated to travel.
  • Perform other duties to support Marketing & Communications as assigned.

ABOUT STORYCORPS

StoryCorps' mission is to help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all — one story at a time. Since 2003, more than 700,000 people, in all 50 states, have recorded StoryCorps interviews about their lives. We preserve and archive their recordings at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered, and share select stories with the public through StoryCorps’ podcast, NPR broadcasts, animated shorts, digital platforms, and best-selling books. These powerful human stories reflect the vast range of American experiences, engender empathy and connection, and remind us how much more we have in common than what divides us. StoryCorps is especially committed to capturing and amplifying voices least heard in the media.

Working at the StoryCorps office is optional except in certain circumstances, such as in-person training, if your position requires some in-office presence, or if your manager needs an in-person individual or team meeting. For those who prefer to work in the office, that option remains.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability
Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026
Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
